We seek a skilled assistant art director and designer with editorial lifestyle and fashion design experience for award-winning titles Seattle magazine, Seattle Bride, Oregon Bride, Seattle magazine’s “Shelter” home section, California Wedding Day, and other front and back of book sections. The assistant art director contributes to editorial art direction, helps execute the overall visual tone and style of the magazine, hires photographers, assigns and collects photography, as as well as occasional hiring of stylists and models, scout shoot locations, designs layouts, while working within the art budgets. The publication places a strong emphasis on design and aesthetic. Must have strong layout and typographic abilities while working under tight deadlines. Will assist on photo shoots and direct photographers, models and stylists. Three to five years of consumer magazine design experience preferred. This position will also support art needs for the digital components of the publications. Must have in-depth knowledge of InDesign, Photoshop. Candidates located in the Seattle area and familiar with photographers and stylists in Seattle and Portland preferred. Candidates must be qualified sales executives with sales experience (preferably advertising sales in print, television, radio or online) to join our family.

We desire candidates with a competitive spirit who want to succeed. You should be a highly motivated, self-starter who can build strong relationships with your customers.

Candidates must have a great track record of prospecting for new business as well as renewing existing accounts at a high percentage. The right candidates will have the ability to establish rapport quickly, have a history of meeting with decision makers and closing in a short sales cycle. We are looking for the top 10% only.

The right candidates have a consultative style, not a telling style. Candidates should be highly motivated in commission based selling with the ability to exceed established goals while generating high client satisfaction.

Editorial Internships

Editorial internships are available at Seattle magazine throughout the year. Most require a minimum commitment of 20 hours per week in our office, during business hours. Work schedules are usually either a morning shift or an afternoon shift. Internships generally last for six months and openings occur approximately every three to four months. Academic credit is available. If academic credit is not needed, a nominal stipend is paid.

Seattle Magazine Online Internship

Seattle magazine is seeking an online intern for a three-month term to work closely with the online editor and other staff editors to gain hands-on experience in maintaining the web presence of Seattle’s premier city magazine. This is a fast-paced, fun internship that requires organization, good verbal communication skills, love of the written word and a sincere interest in learning the basic tools of the web, including content management systems, working and researching on the Internet, blogging, SEO and social media.

The Seattlemag.com intern will:

  • Assist in updating our site with fresh content from the print edition, including calendar events, charitable events, restaurant and shopping listings, party pictures and select articles
  • Pitch ideas and write weekly for the blog on Seattlemag.com
  • Write headlines to SEO standards under guidance of online editor
  • Assist with Seattle magazine’s Pinterest page in accordance with our social media guidelines
  • Look through our social media pages for the best comments, tweets and posts to appear in the Seattle magazine’s monthly letters to the editor column
  • Write and compile the weekly Restaurant Insider newsletter
  • Attend events or photo shoots as necessary for blogging or behind-the-scenes video purposes

The Seattlemag.com intern should have the following skills:

  • A sincere interest in the Internet, blogs and social networking
  • Serious attention to detail
  • Blogging, CMS and social media experience
  • An interest in Seattle and what’s going on around the city
  • Basic knowledge of SEO and keyword search
  • Basic Photoshop skills
  • Ability to follow formatting standards
  • Willingness to be a part of a team

As an intern, you will be an integral part of the team responsible for producing this premier monthly publication and its website. You will be called upon regularly to use your excellent verbal communication and research skills. Observing life in the city, interns are the eyes, ears and feet of the magazine. You will work on a wide range of projects, from the glamorous to the granular. This is a teaching internship and is unpaid except for a small stipend upon completion. It requires a commitment of four hours a day, five days a week for three months. Flexible morning and afternoon shifts.

 

 

Seattle Magazine Editorial Internship

Our interns gain hands-on experience working closely with top editors in an environment that is creative and collaborative. As an intern, you will be an integral part of the team responsible for producing this premier monthly publication and its website. Enduring enthusiasm, curiosity and a love of the written word are essential prerequisites for the position. You will be called upon regularly to use your excellent verbal communication and research skills. Attention to detail—even an obsession with it—will come in handy. Interns help us bring up-and-coming trends home to the readers. Observing life in the city, interns are the eyes, ears and feet of the magazine. You will work on a wide range of projects, from the glamorous to the granular. You will become familiar with the varied pace of a magazine's production schedule. Projects might include (but are not limited to) the following: fact-checking stories, helping with research on major projects, writing short pieces, conducting interviews, attending events, researching story leads, uploading web content, contributing to website blogs and writing online articles. Unpaid internships require a commitment of four hours a day, five days a week for six months. Morning and afternoon shifts are available. All editorial interns also provide invaluable support to our online editor, including uploading magazine content to the online archives, maintaining directories, assisting with social media coverage, and researching and pitching blog ideas. This portion of your internship is a great opportunity to broaden your understanding of SEO, online content strategy and basic tools for the web.
