The Mint Julep (and other forms of Julep) has been around for a long time. While now most people only know the traditional version – which is swell, when made right – variations on the theme are part of a long lineage.

Since this Saturday is the Kentucky Derby, traditionally the biggest Mint Julep day of the year (and for me, really the beginning of Julep season), don’t miss a chance to sample some of our city’s finest Juleps before, after or during the race.

Witness, Maker’s in the Market Julep

This southern-y Capitol Hill bar makes a dandy regular Mint Julep, but its Maker’s in the Market Julep, created by bar star Bridget Maloney, takes it to another level. Mingling Maker’s Mark bourbon, cherry jam, housemade black peppercorn simple syrup, chocolate bitters, fresh mint and brandied cherries, it’s an explosion of fresh flavor underlined by that sweet bourbon, and a great way to bring the south and our cherry-rific northwest together.

Percy’s & Co., Balmed Julep

Stroll down Old Ballard Avenue and you might be able to find a number of Juleps, but perhaps none made with as much interest and care as this flavorful number. It mixes a star anise-, allspice- and mint-infused bourbon, Angostura bitters, soda, and simple syrup with a burst of fresh ginger and fresh lime juice into a spice-and-tang combination that’s to be savored.

Habitant, Gin Mint Julep

Located in the Nordstrom in Bellevue Square, Habitant is the ideal place to stop if you need to while away the time while your significant other is shopping – or if you just want a good cocktail on the east side. And recently, its bar manager Dan Yeisley whipped up a gin-based julep in honor of the Derby, with Genever (a gin cousin or progenitor), Mathilde peach liqueur, mint, and soda. Yummy, and sure to help you find the finish line.

Kickin’ Boot Whiskey Kitchen, Mint Julep

If you’re going to go the classic route, and keep it pure and straightforward, you’d better be at some spot that reveres whiskey – and here that reverence is in the bar name! Kickin’ Boot makes its Julep with just bourbon, mint, and sugar, keeping it simple and classical. If you want to pick your bourbon, you’re also in luck, because it has more than 90 varieties, from local hits like Woodinville Whiskey Co. to out-of-town delights like Old Blowhard 26 year old.
