Talking About Death

By Seattle Mag November 21, 2014

Fancy drinks and a movie this rainy weekend? This Saturday evening event has both, and they each come with a twist—the movie is Speaking of Dying, a short documentary about community-based end-of-life planning, a project from local chaplain and facilitator Trudy James, and the drinks are by A.J. Rathbun, freelance food and entertainment writer (and regular Seattle mag contributor) who also happens to be James’ son.

Events encouraging more routine conversation about death seem to be a bit of a trend (see: Death Cafes), and Brittany Maynard’s decision to end her own life in Portland while battling terminal cancer has brought even more awareness to the topic. Saturday’s event begins at 5 p.m. and you’ll be able to meet James and others featured in the movie, as well as the filmmaker and editor, all while sipping local distillery treats.
