Just 15 minutes north of Seattle, Edmonds’ tiny downtown area continues to fill with one-of-a-kind shops, galleries and more

At the center of downtown Edmonds—a short walk from the waterfront and ferry dock—rests a swath of shops and homes that a century ago catered to a thriving logging industry. Today, the five-block downtown—anchored by Main Street, between Sunset and Fifth avenues—is filled with colorful boutiques, galleries and eateries that serve the expanding community.

EAT
Turophiles (cheese lovers!) will find an impressive selection of specialty and hard-to-find curds and meats at the Resident Cheese Monger (405 Main St.; 425.640.8949; residentcheesemonger.com), a tiny gourmet shop packed with locally crafted favorites (the shop’s owner swears by Mt. Townsend Creamery’s Seastack, a Brie-style soft cheese sprinkled with sea salt) and European imports galore. At Edmonds Bakery (418 Main St.; 425.778.6811; edmondsbakery.com), enjoy old-fashioned sugar cookies and gooey cinnamon rolls that rival those found at big-city boutique bakeries. Find an expansive selection of wine, cocktails and beer at The Loft Café and Social Lounge (515A E Main St.; 425.640.5000; theloftlounge.com), a quiet café by day and a bustling bar by night, or order a plate from the eatery’s Mediterranean-inspired menu. If it’s comfort food you want, the homey menu at charming Chanterelle (316 Main St.; 425.774.0650; chanterellewa.com) promises to feed your cravings at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Don’t miss out on a caffeine pick-me-up at sleek and industrial Red Twig Bakery & Café (117 Fifth Ave. S; 425.771.1200; redtwig.com). The black ironwork that adorns this coffee shop is a perfect backdrop for a tasty morning-time goody or afternoon snack. Score retro classic sweets such as Clark bars and Smarties, plus chocolates galore at sweet and fragrant Nama’s Candy Store (102½ Fifth Ave. N; 425.771.4606; namascandystore.com).
