Behind the Scenes of our June Issue: Ice-cream Headaches and Heady Debates

Our editors are still recovering from GelatoGate 2011, the week-long orgy of ice-cream eating that preceeded our June issue (on newsstands today). Our award-winning and downright awesome food editor Ali Scheff made the picks, our fantastically talented art director Sue Boylan called in the props, and then it was ice cream everywhere for two weeks here at SeaMag. We think you’ll agree that our sacrifice was well worth it; Ali’s list of eight great cool treats is worth the cover price alone. (The clear winner: D’Ambrosio’s pistachio. There, I said it.)

Feeling a tad sorry for myself this sadly soggy spring, but like a true Seattleite, I’ll suck it up and dream about beach bonfires, awesome hikes and outdoor movie nights—all of which you’ll find in our Summer Cravings wrap-up.

My other fave things about this issue? Outdoor editor Roddy Scheer’s mud-splattered profile of crazed obstacle courses has me thinking dirty thoughts. I am going to eat my way down Ali’s list of secret outdoor patios. I hope Knute ruffles a few feathers with his spicy take on our “guns and lattes” economy. And the fact that web editor Karen Johnson not only landed interviews with 8 notoriously busy, jet-setty and big-dreaming local “thought leaders” (the minds behind TEDx, Ignite and the like)…but also got most of them to come to our offices bright and early one morning for a lively debate…that’s the reason I love coming to work. Well, and the ice cream.
