One of the first Seattle-made gifts I got for my son when he was first born seven years ago was a little premature for a newborn but has turned out to be an invaluable teaching tool now that he is older.
The Moonjar Moneybox, created by Seattle native Eulalie Scandiuzzi, is a sophisticated piggy bank with three compartments: one for saving, one for spending and one for sharing (Seattle is one of the most philanthropic cities in the country, so why not start them young?). Alessandro will be dipping into his sharing bin this year to buy a toy for a less financially fortunate child his age.
Moneyboxes are available in a sturdy paper model for $7.95, a more sturdy classic tin model for $24.95 or, to really deliver that financial planning message (especially important in this economy, of course), The Moonjar Family Kit. A $30 version comes with two paper Moonjar Banks, which is handy for families with more than one child; the $45 version has one of the retro tin banks. The kit also comes with a lesson plan and conversation starters about money for parents and plush characters from the How the Moonjar was Made book (also included).
Moonjar Moneyboxes and the kit are available at the Moonjar store (Capitol Hill, 612 19th Ave. E; 206.726.0767; Hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mon.–Fri.) or online at moonjar.com. Moonjar products are also available at one of my fav local toy stores, Top Ten Toys and also at Izilla Toys.
And here's the added bonus! We've got one to give away for free!
Comment to this blog post with how you're teaching the value of money to your child and if you're the first person to comment, you'll receive a Moonjar Family Kit ($45 value) free (thanks, Moonjar!).
But wait, there's more (always wanted to write that): Moonjar is offering Seattle Magazine readers a 15% in-store only discount at the Moonjar Seattle location from December 9 through December 23. Just mention this blog post and they'll take care of you!
