On Wednesday morning, I sat down with chef William Belickis (of Belltown’s Mistral, which closed March of 2008) in a 5,000-square-foot concrete space at the intersection of 8th Avenue and Westlake in South Lake Union that, in the span of four months will inevitably be one of the most expensive restaurant openings of the year.

In a city bursting with one-of-kind coffee shops, stopping by a cookie-cutter Starbucks location can feel like a caffeinated sin. Starbucks hopes to change all of that with a new neighborhood cafe concept launching tomorrow.

I just took my second spin around Ouch My Eye's excellent Ctrl Alt Design show, curated by JOIN: Design Seattle, and found myself still covetous of all the clever and lovely (and useful!) items exhibited. Observe: Doorknobs made out of hockey pucks (they feel so great in your hand!).

Last month, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) was in the limelight once again, this time for their objection to the fishmongers at Pike Place Market.

Sometimes traveling feels more like work than relaxation. Going to an exotic locale halfway around the world looks like fun when I'm at home watching the Travel Channel.  In reality, when I journey thousand of miles from home (and have to pack for strange weather, schlep around my baggage, navigate the airport, switch time zones and pay huge amounts of money for the pleasure) I feel more like I'm a contestant on the Survivor T.V. show.  It's so stressful that I want to be voted off my own vacation!

I thoroughly enjoyed Thursday’s opening night performance of Bottega ZinZanni, the creative collaboration of two of Seattle’s biggest dreamers; local fashion designer Luly Yang and purveyors of one-of-a-kind dinner theater, Teatro Zinzanni. Encouraging our imaginations to soar, the two joined hands to create the cabaret-style show which tells a beautiful story about the transformative nature of fashion.

The supply of P-Patches is low, so why not start your own? Last Saturday I attended a celebration of a brand new P-Patch in West Seattle. Over 40 people attended to mark the event–I was amazed that this many people would show up at 9:00a.m. on a chilly June Saturday that was threatening rain. I knew myself to be a nerdy gardening type, preoccupied with powdery mildew and the pH balance of my soil, but I had no idea the density of nerdy gardeners in my neighborhood was so high!

Two months after being introduced, Woodland Park Zoo’s Humboldt penguins are already being upstaged. With big eyes and tiny roars, a pair of four week old Snow Leopard cubs are pushing the Humboldt out of the top spot for cutest zoo animal (an unofficial poll of course). The 4 lb male and 3.6 lb female cub were born on May 25th to a set of first time parents who were brought to the Zoo a year ago as part of a Species Survival Plan.
