Space Shuttle
And the winner is...not Seattle! Museum of Flight spokespeople and state officials are making the best of NASA's decision not to send one of its four retired space shuttles to Seattle. The M of F was one of 21 facilities in the running for a shuttle, and the competition was intense. In the end, Seattle was passed over in favor of  the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, the California Science Center, Kennedy Space Center in Florida, and, for some reason, the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York.

The Seattle Times reports today on ocean acidification research taking Puget Sound, a topic that our very own Maria Dolan tackled in last month's issue. In honor of today's front page ST story, here are a few photos from the magazine, including a few previously unpublished online.

Earlier this month The Seattle Times published an eye-opening piece on the shrinking number of in-state students being admitted into the University of Washington. The article, which has garnered more than 700 comments on seattletimes.com and 3, 500+ Facebook likes, has clearly struck a chord with locals. This weekend an unexpected voice introduced another side to the admissions story.

Tom Douglas
Last week, Tom Douglas announced via Twitter (@TomDouglasCo) that Cuoco, the Italian pasta house that anchors his revamped brick Terry Avenue Building, was open. At Cuoco, longtime Tom Douglas pastaiola Martha Francis will work alongside Cuoco chef Stuart Lane (who last awed us at Cafe Juanita) to create dishes like gnocchi with nettle pesto, hazelnuts and pancetta; fresh pea risotto with pea vines and ham hock; artichoke raviolie with mascarpone and Parmesan. And that's just the pasta!

Flash mobbers took over Seattle yesterday for a three-stop Glee performance in Seattle Center, Westlake and Capitol Hill. I "swung by" the 10th and Pike performance after getting a head's up from a friend who was performing. Here's a montage of the performances pulled from Youtube:

Crudo is an Italian dish of raw fish dressed with olive oil, citrus, and sea salt. The beauty of a good crudo lies in its ability to preserve the subtlety of the fish flavor and bring out its richness with good olive oil while simultaneously balancing it with acid—in this case, orange juice. The best crudos have a textural component: here I use chopped bits of pumpkin seed and crunchy crystals of Maldon sea salt (worth seeking out at a specialty market or online if you’ve never had it). Serves 4 as an appetizer Ingredients: ½ pound sea scallops

We highlight 15 affordable meals in this month's Best Restaurants cover story. Here's a peak at one of my favorite dishes in the section, a wonderfully authentic silken tofu stew from Korean Tofu House in the University District.

Must Cheer Mariners Opening Day: Live Macklemore Performance
Thursday, 04/07/2011 6:45 PM
From underground (Hollow Earth Radio) to tragically hip (Too Beautiful to Live), this month’s media story ("Radio Waves") reveals that podcasting isn’t just a relic of the mid-2000s.

My love for Capitol Hill rapper Macklemore (aka Ben Haggerty) is no secret--in fact I gave him a 2010 Spotlight Award last September. Since then he's only been gaining in acclaim, and tomorrow, he'll sing "My Oh My," his touching tribute to Dave Niehaus, at the Mariner's Opening Game. Go Ben! (Oh, and go Ms, too.) If you want to learn more about this local superstar before he hits the field, read my profile from last year.
