Road trippin’ down to Portland is always such a pleasure and a wee bit of pain. Because as much as I adore SEA, the nifty Rose City almost always brings on pangs of Portland envy. On this overnighter, the jealousy was mostly about the Umläut.

national poetry month a.j. rathbun cocktail recipes and poems
You’ve probably been reading poems out loud to friends and loved ones (and potential loved ones) all this month, in celebration of National Poetry Month, and have worked up a powerful thirst. To quench the thirst and continue the poetry, here are four poetic cocktails, each matched up with a few lines from a poet in my 2010 collection: In Their Cups: An Anthology of Poems About Drinking Places, Drinks, and Drinkers.

The sun's been shining, the weather's warming up. It's that time of year again, when Seattle's neighborhood farmers markets are on the verge of their 2013 seasons.

The Endless Knot Warehouse Sale started Thursday, April 25 and runs through Sunday, April 28. This is a sale that always sneaks up on me and always happens on a weekend that I’m already busy, but Endless Knot is one of the best, under-the-radar shops in town, which makes me think that their warehouse sale is equally as good.

Western Ave.’s home furnishings store. Liave, is closing their brick and mortar location and heading into the world of e-commerce. Between now and the store’s last (TBD), all in-stock inventory, including all the lovely European home décor and gift items this store is known for, is 20 percent off. I love this shop and its tagline: "beautiful things meant to be used," and look forward to what treasures owner Cornelia Veit will have to share online.

There should be a 12-step group for fans of Autumn Martin’s Hot Cakes Molten Chocolate Cakery, which will soon celebrate its one year cake-iversary in Ballard’s Old Towne. I know my trousers are a bit tighter since this tempting sweet shop debuted. I’m especially hooked on those beautiful, boozy shakes, the subject of Autumn’s new book, Malts & Milkshakes: 60 Recipes for Frosty, Creamy, Frozen Treats, released April 9. This book should not be cracked when you’re hungry.

The iconic Belltown corner where Scott Carsberg’s Lampreia lived for two decades (and which later became Bisato) reopened last week as The Lost Pelican.

Without going into too much detail, let me tell you that last week sucked for me personally. I was seriously under the weather and experiencing a very low ebb. I didn’t get to train at all and at some points was pretty convinced that I wouldn’t be able to even walk the Earth Day 5k on Saturday, let alone run it. But, thanks to the miracle of modern medicine and buoyed by the tremendous support of my friends, family and co-workers, I pulled a major Ali rally and run/walked the heck out of that baby.

MUST WALKEarth Day 5KSaturday (4/20) — Seattle magazine’s first ever 5k run/walk follows a gorgeous route that wends through the Olympic Sculpture Park and skirts Elliott Bay along the Myrtle Edwards Park bike trail. A portion of each registration goes to the Green Seattle Partnership, a nonprofit working to restore our urban forests and parks. An eco-friendly beer garden at Bell Harbor will reward both participants and spectators at the finish line.

organic cocktails
April 22 is Earth Day, and while I strongly suggest you do some earth-friendly activities and think about ways to better help out the planet in the following year on that day, I also think it’s a nice idea to raise a cocktail or two in honor of the day – and the earth. When hosting said cocktails, go organic to keep in the spirit of things.
