They clasp hands, link arms or sometimes lay heads on each other’s shoulders. In a few cases, someone kisses another on the cheek. At first glance, New York photographer Richard Renaldi’s street portraits seem to be of oddly paired friends—people you wouldn’t expect to see hanging out together, who paused on the sidewalk for a spontaneous snapshot. But the subjects in his photos have never met. Since 2007, Renaldi has been traveling the country and asking complete strangers to physically interact for a series of photos called Touching Strangers.

Perhaps the best way to introduce Chinook Fest–a Seattle-grown roots rock festival held in central Washington–is to explain that it currently occupies the desirable groove between fledgling production and overcrowded mobfest.

What’s your favorite current Seattle band? If you have trouble answering (or if you draw a blank after Macklemore), we’re not going to judge. But we are going to suggest it’s time to check in with the city’s thriving indie music scene. New local bands are exploring sounds, blurring genre boundaries (though we’ve wrestled them into categories here) and playing vibrant live shows all over town (see our Live Music Venue guide).

ultimate fan, how to be, 12th, 6 ways, seahawks, fans, football
Football season is back and it kicks off right in our backyard with our beloved Seahawks playing the Greenbay Packers at CenturyLink Field. Let's take a look back: Were we, the fans, the reason that the Seahawks won the Super Bowl? Probably not the only reason, but we sure did help. (We do have a giant flag that is raised just for us during pregame ceremonies at every home game.) Seahawks pride is in a league of its own and has put other teams' fans to shame.

Become Ocean, John Luther Adams, Benaroya Hall, Seattle Symphony, Pulitzer
The opening strains of the symphony Become Ocean are like some faraway aural mirage—so low and rumbling that at first, it’s unclear if what you are hearing is real. But soon a magnificent soundscape crystallizes, one that ebbs and flows, pulling and pushing the listener along as if at the mercy of the tides. The Seattle Symphony commissioned Alaska-based composer John Luther Adams to create the stunning piece, which premiered at Benaroya Hall in 2013 and this year earned Adams the Pulitzer Prize for music.

viora, coffee lid, to-go lids, doug fleming, specialty coffee association
Who better than a Seattleite to come up with a high-tech coffee lid? Doug Fleming, a native son and avid follower of “third wave” coffee trends, thought it was a shame to ruin high-quality coffee by sipping it through a poorly designed lid. He founded a company called Vaporpath in 2007 and devoted years to developing a better sipping experience. At long last, the Viora Lid ( was born—and launched to acclaim in April at the Specialty Coffee Association of America conference. Manufactured in the U.S.

throwback thursday, seahawks, history
It is a perfect, sunny gameday Thursday and the weekend is imminent. What could make today better? How about a quick Seahawks history lesson and some old school Seahawks pictures? In honor of our Super Bowl champs returning to CenturyLink Field tonight, I'd say it would be downright fitting.

It's almost as mouthwatering as the kickoff, almost as heartwarming as the national anthem being sung before the first football game of the season, and almost as delicious as that first touchdown. That first glimpse of divine munchables and irresistible comfort foods splayed out on the tailgate party table before the big game—the excitement is just too much for me to contain. 'Tis the season to fill your plate (or two) and eat your heart out—no need to be polite! Opening game day is almost you have your tailgating munchies accounted for?
