Origins of style: “I can remember in the early 1980s when I was in sixth or seventh grade asking for a pink sweater and subscriptions to Vogue, Interview and GQ for Christmas,” says 41-year-old Nordstrom personal stylist Brent Martin—requests that made him quite an original in small-town Colorado, where he grew up.

Sweet Petula bodycare creator, Formulary 55 owner and longtime fixture in the Seattle-area retail scene, Cordelia Smith, announced yesterday that she's moving herself and the biz down to Pueblo, Colorado (for the affordable living and high quality of life). Starting today, Smith will not be open her normal business hours, but does plan to open the store a few more times before hightailing it out of here towards the sun.

A well-fitted button up shirt can do wonders for a woman’s figure, in my humble opinion. Done right, it buttons without gaping, hugs the lines of her back and sides without bulging, shows off her lovely hourglass shape and strikes a very sophisticated and polished cut of her jib. Too often, though, the fit is not correct, and both gaps and bulges are present, which is probably why many women have sworn off fitted tops that button up the front. I know I have for the most part, opting instead for looser fitting blouses and knitted tops.

The real brunt of winter is hopefully behind us, and our winter was no polar vortex, but the dry and itchy skin that results from being inside with the heater cranked has just been brutal this season. Kiehl’s, one of my favorite American heritage brands, has just launched two new products, sent from heaven to relieve the parched visage that stares back from the mirror each morning.

Dolce bleu prom dress shops seattle seattle magazine
Shopping for a prom dress with a teenage girl is a memorable experience, as much for the thrill of it as for the potential for a meltdown. A failed search for just the right gown for her daughter’s prom, combined with a profuse love for all things sparkly, prompted West Seattle–based Crista Martin to open Dolce Bleu (3220 First Ave. S; 206.420.7320; dolcebleu.com) last fall, a formal dress shop in a soaring SoDo warehouse space stocked with a bevy of beaded and sequined gowns appropriate for proms, galas, weddings and pageants.

New York’s fashion week started today and all the talk about Alexander Wang moving his show to Brooklyn (radical!) and the stellar indie lineup of Milk’s Made Fashion Week (Cushnie et Ochs, Alexandre Herchcovitch, Jonathan Simkhai, Jeremy Scott and many others) running concurrent to the tents at Lincoln Center has got me thinking about Seattle’s nonexistent fashion week and why that is.
