Went to the Mother Earth News Fair at the Puyallup Fairgrounds yesterday to hear the "high priest of the pasture" Joel Salatin and, please don't string me up, I was underwhelmed. Oh, he's an entertaining speaker and the enthusiastic shouts of "Amen!" proved he was preaching to the choir. Maybe I was expecting too much, but he didn't bring anything new to the table in terms of serving up concrete advise about how individuals could make the planet a better place. ("We should plant fruit trees in the medians on interstates!" just didn't speak to me.)

There are some showstoppers at the new Collections Cafe, where Crush chef Jason Wilson collaborated on the menu with Space Needle executive chef Jeff Maxfield and resident chef Ivan Szilak. Not only do south-end eaters have the just-opened Cafe con Leche (aka, the reinvented Paladar Cubano) serving up Cubano sandwiches, and the slick-looking Sodo Kitchen at Starbucks for new lunch options (not to mention my longtime standbys Maruta Shoten and Hudson Diner), now there's one more place to check out: The Blu

Lucky Lake Union neighbors, you have scored quite a spring treat! The Farmboat Floating Market is happening! Every Thursday, starting this week (5/10, 11am-3pm), you can shop for fresh produce and locally crafted treats aboard the "Virgina V." It's been quite a seven years for Michelle Quisenberry and her chef-husband Don Curtiss, and quite a seven years for Old Ballard Ave. When Volterra opened on the historic street in 2005, few of the current businesses had yet to open: no Bastille, Moshi Moshi, no Walrus & Carpentor or any of the slew of new bars and eateries farther south on that narrow road.

Awesome as it is, most of us usually feel like we need a good reason to have dinner at the Space Needle's restaurant, SkyCity. Your Uncle Bob and Aunt Harriet are visiting from Muskogee. Your boyfriend wants to put a ring on it.

It's still a little random that American businesses widely observe Cinco de Mayo (and not actual Mexican Independence day: September 16). On the other hand, who wants to argue with an excuse to celebrate during the sober waking-nightmare we all silently suffer between St. Patrick's Day and the Fourth of July? Just kidding. Here's a few go-to places where you can be sure to observe the beloved tradition of knocking back tequila and tacos, no matter what day it is.

Gather 'round, Seattleites! I’m teaching a cocktail class July 20 & 21 -- same class twice -- at the effervescent and ebullient Pantry at Delancey, where the drinks are delicious, the snacks are snacktastic, and the staff is stellar.

Having a little late breakfast with my young son yesterday at the always delicious Geraldine's (I've said it before and I'll say it again: the ricotta pancakes with strawberries are better than any other pancakes in town), I happened to pick up a flyer for Bo Ramen.
