It’s been a full harvest of bar news and notes, with lots of bubbly things happening in the Seattle bar world, including special events, openings and more. While the below is not an exhaustive list (which would just get, well, exhausting) these highlights will help you set your fall drinking agenda.
Hey dude! Yes, you. The guy in shorts and T-shirt and flip flops walking through the Metropolitan Grill dining room carrying a bottle of electric blue Gatorade: Get a clue and put on a nice outfit, huh?
Seriously, the Met is one of the few places in Seattle where people dress up, especially on a Saturday night and you look as if you’re heading to a Grand Theft Auto marathon. Please!
I spent the last three days and nights ingesting a crazy amount of food and bev at FeastPDX, the Bon Appetit-sponsored food fest in the Rose City. It was the festival's second year; I attended last year as well. And while I had no complaints about last year, overall I think this year's festival was better: more events, a few free events, some very good tasting panels and speakers, and of course, the primo events: the Sandwich Invitational, Night Market and High Comfort.
Honestly, there aren’t enough hayrack rides (aka hayrides) anymore. At least I don’t think so. I grew up mainly in Kansas, and took my fair share of hayrack rides, so I could be biased. But come on! Riding around with a bunch of pals snuggled up on the back of a cart surrounded by hay bales? That’s a good time – especially if you have the right drink in a mug, flask or other beverage-holding device. If you can’t actually get on a hayrack ride this year, I suggest at least putting a couple bales in the backyard and making one of the following to honor the tradition.
This weekend, the biggest and best Northwest food festival is taking place in Portland. Seventy food media and at least that many star chefs--from Philly, New York City, Charleston, Austin, LA and Seattle--are taking over the Rose City for Feast Portland, a nonstop food blitz: tasting events, lectures, wine and beer events, collaborative dinners, and woah, are there some after-parties.
But if you're not already going, you're not going, since almost everything's sold out.
Three cheers to the awesomest Seahawks fans for braving the elements on Sunday, including a dramatic, game delaying thunderstorm and shattering the make-some-noise Guinness World’s Record at an eardrum-testing 136.6 decibels. High fives and fist bumps all around!
Can some of that effusive enthusiasm be credited to the debut of the 12th Can? Sure, why not?
I’m patriotic as the next person, so I believe (though I may hem and haw somewhat when the summons arrives) that taking part in the judicial process is a part of being a good American citizen. However, I don’t believe you should have to chew through a bad lunch because you’re in the midst of your duty -- especially because jury duty tends to involve a nice long lunch break. With that, here are a few suggestions for satisfying lunchtime treats the next time you’re summoned to a downtown Seattle court.
It's hard to know what to root for this time of year: More of this sensational summer weather, long dinners on the patio, meals at home that come together almost too easily with just a sliced ripe tomato and some cheese to start, something off of the grill for the main, and peak season fruit to finish. Or for the soothing cool mornings of autumn, sweater weather, the coziness of meandering walks through dry leaves, trips to the pumpkin patch, apple sauce and cider.
It’s been said that summer’s not over until the last bottle of rose is drained. So, the recent arrival of a special pink wine benefiting the Queen Anne Farmers Market makes sipping for a great cause even sweeter.
If you want your tailgating party to rise above the others parked on the asphalt, I suggest you up the drink ante and serve more than just beer. Adding some extra style and substance to your tailgate drinks certainly makes the day better, no matter if your team wins or loses.
