It's been quite a seven years for Michelle Quisenberry and her chef-husband Don Curtiss, and quite a seven years for Old Ballard Ave. When Volterra opened on the historic street in 2005, few of the current businesses had yet to open: no Bastille, Moshi Moshi, no Walrus & Carpentor or any of the slew of new bars and eateries farther south on that narrow road.

Awesome as it is, most of us usually feel like we need a good reason to have dinner at the Space Needle's restaurant, SkyCity. Your Uncle Bob and Aunt Harriet are visiting from Muskogee. Your boyfriend wants to put a ring on it.

It's still a little random that American businesses widely observe Cinco de Mayo (and not actual Mexican Independence day: September 16). On the other hand, who wants to argue with an excuse to celebrate during the sober waking-nightmare we all silently suffer between St. Patrick's Day and the Fourth of July? Just kidding. Here's a few go-to places where you can be sure to observe the beloved tradition of knocking back tequila and tacos, no matter what day it is.

Gather 'round, Seattleites! I’m teaching a cocktail class July 20 & 21 -- same class twice -- at the effervescent and ebullient Pantry at Delancey, where the drinks are delicious, the snacks are snacktastic, and the staff is stellar.

Having a little late breakfast with my young son yesterday at the always delicious Geraldine's (I've said it before and I'll say it again: the ricotta pancakes with strawberries are better than any other pancakes in town), I happened to pick up a flyer for Bo Ramen.

Seattle magazine is the media sponsor for the Space Needle's 50th Anniversary celebration (ongoing through October). And we're glad to help spread the word about the "tastiest" event they've come up with since since their local brewery competition.

You could say that Washington Governor Chris Gregoire has started a war of wine words. On Monday, while announcing funding for a new $5 million wine research center in Richland, she uncorked a story about a recent trade mission to Europe. “Someone asked me what about California wine, and I said they make jug wine. We make fine wine!” Her comment drew cheers and laughter.

On Saturday's Seattle Kitchen radio show, Tom Douglas dropped a bomb: He's "getting pretty close" to opening a falafel joint right here in Seattle. Say wha?

After announcing in February that it would be closing up shop on June 2nd, Ballard's beloved bastion of fine French-Northwest dining is going to be with us a short while longer.

In the April issue of Seattle magazine, I shake up five new (to me) local spirits. But they aren’t the only new local liquors or liqueurs in town. One of the offshoots of our local distillery explosion (which I detailed in another article) is the growing number of fresh offerings from our expanding crop of Washington State distillers. Consider the three spirits listed below to be three more reasons why our state is becoming a center of cocktail culture.
