It was another week of marathon eating and most of it was good.  Here are some of the highlights of my last 7 days of feeding:

There are a lot of new restaurants in Seattle. An exhausting amount, really. I suppose that’s what happens during a city’s growth spurt. And I suppose what happens next is that only a small handful of them will survive. I see it as a sort of unintentional experiment for potential new restaurants—those who plan to open one will be able to see what works in today’s market without actually having to spend their own money. It’s a little morose, but lots can be learned from others' failures.

Did you realize that Café Pettirosso on Capitol Hill, once closed on Mondays, now opens its door specifically to hold what is arguable this city’s best (only?) bake sale every week?

UPDATE: Timmons told me Sunday that he has pushed the opening date to Tuesday, Sept. 9, and that instead of being open daily, Jack's BBQ will be open Tues-Sun. Turns out, working 7 days a week doesn't give the man enough time to sleep or see his family.

As of yesterday, the not-so-hidden anymore back bar at E. Smith Mercantile in Pioneer Square is offering lunch.

It was a long and enjoyable week of eating. Not only did I have some out of town guests to entertain, but as summer winds down, there’s been an increased hankering for comfort food. Here are some of the highlights of my last 7 days of feeding:

Family meal at Matt's in the Market
There are meals in almost every restaurant serving off-menu items that you would never be lucky enough to eat unless you worked in the restaurant. They’re called family meals and they're served before or after service to feed those who work tirelessly to bring good food to your table — staff members who rarely get a chance to eat during their busy shift.

After operating her wildly successful baking and pastry pop-up at Book Larder for more than a year, Rachael Coyle has found a permanent home.

The news came by way of press release late yesterday afternoon: Aragona, the Spanish restaurant Jason Stratton (Spinasse, Artusi) opened downtown last December, is coming to an end. In an unexpected turn of events, it will close after dinner service September 6, morph into an Italian restaurant, and reopen as Vespolina on Monday, September 8.

On Tuesday, I had two emails in my inbox: One announcing Eric Banh’s upcoming Vietnamese steakhouse opening this fall and another announcing chef Heong Soon Park’s dim sum-style Tray Kitchen opening around the same time.

Initially, developer Scott Shapiro envisioned a space on lower Queen Anne to match his Capitol Hill project, Melrose Market—a bunch of artisans and restaurants under one roof. But after a year of trying to find qualified and interested vendors, it’s been revealed that a single occupant has snatched up the entire 7,000-square-foot space.

I did something on Sunday that I need to do more often: get out of town. I grabbed a friend and ferried over to Bainbridge Island yesterday morning (barely a line!) to just decompress.
