He's growing... again! Tom Douglas—the 2012 James Beard Foundation restaurateur of the year and one of Seattle Mag's most influential people of 2011—is going to open The Grange Hall next spring, a 10,000-square foot space on the ground floor of the apartment building going up on Sixth and Lenora downtown.

The Ruby Room is an excellent organization, run by West Seattleite Nyla Bitterman, that has been giving away free formal dresses to girls in need for 10 years, making prom a possibility for many of them. In 2012 the organization provided dresses to over 500 teens, and sponsored their first scholarship to a low-income fashion student at Seattle Central Community College.

This weekend brings us the 34th annual Pilchuck Auction, something of a "fashion week" for Seattle glass art collectors. In addition to hosting a swank gala and tours of the school's Stanwood campus, Pilchuck organizes an enormous auction of glass art made by Pilchuck students, teachers and alumni. Proceeds benefit scholarship programs at the school, which is now recognized as the premier glassblowing program in the nation.

Walking through my neighborhood, I can't help but covet the fig trees weighed down with green figs on the verge of full ripeness, the Asian pear tree in my neighbor's yard which holds, I'd guess, 40lbs of fruit right now. But in a few weeks, these and the myriad apples that are ripe right now in trees on nearly every Seattle street will perish, rot, or fall and turn to brown muck on the sidewalks if they're not picked and eaten.

We're huge fans of makeup artist Suresh's style: sleek, soft and modern. His GlossLUXE lipglosses are a mainstay in our makeup bag, and his newish line of lipsticks, flecked with crushed diamonds, rubies, amethysts and yellow garnets, are our newest obsession.

This year’s Incredible Feast lived up to its name, as more than 25 chefs paired up with superstar farmers, ranchers and cheese makers on Sunday at Swanson’s Nursery. Chef Tamara Murphy dreamed this dealie-o up years ago as a way to showcase the incredible edibles that show up at the Seattle Neighborhood Farmers Markets. Man, we are lucky to live here!

While the last week or so saw its usual share of food news from relative newbies – Marination Ma Kai opening, Chino's closing and the answer to the is-it-or-isn't-it Fuji Bakery mystery – two grand-dames of the Seattle restaurant world were quietly kicking off new chapters in their very admirable histories.

Sure, it’s hard to exchange a very sunny summer for fall’s less-bright horizons. But think of all the fun fall highlights:pretty leaves fluttering in the breeze, soft and warm autumn sweaters and, of course, the following five drinks. Each of these is bound to make you enjoy fall a little more—even if they might not completely make you forget summer.

Do you eat wild salmon? Then, chances are you’ve enjoyed fish from Alaska’s beautiful Bristol Bay, where massive fisheries produce roughly half of the salmon that shows up on plates around the U.S. That’s one thing I learned when I showed up to a press conference yesterday at Seatown, called to discuss the threat to that habitat by the proposed Pebble Mine project.

Same sex marriage is not only on the November ballot in Seattle, it's on the minds of people all over the country. As was pointed out in our current story on local same sex couples, this is the civil rights issue of our time. (If you haven't yet, be sure to watch Seattle hip-hop star Macklemore's new and lovely video, Same Love, in support of gay marriage.)

Last week was Fashion Week at the Bellevue Collection, and as always, the shows were well attended, well produced and gave the area’s best-dressed glitterati a chance to bring out their bling, don their Louboutins and get a good look at fall trends through the lens of Vogue magazine and Bellevue Collection retailers.
