St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner, and with it comes not only an honoring of Ireland and the Irish people, but usually a whole lot of tipsy folks running around. Instead of just drinking green beer randomly, why not dig a little deeper with a few choice bits of lore and learning – and some drinks that match up with them.
MUST SEEVivian Maier: Out of the Shadows Ongoing (closes 3/28 ) — The story is nothing short of incredible. A nanny who lived in New York City and Chicago, Vivian Maier was also a devoted shutterbug who took captivating street shots of everyday people—amounting to a roll of film a day from the 1950s through the ’70s. But she kept her hobby private, piling up more than 100,000 negatives in storage units, which went undiscovered until 2007. Her incisive eye is remarkable, and her story is an ode to art for art’s sake.
Chris Hansen launches a "Priority Ticket Waitlist" today for future tickets to Sonics games. As explained on the Sonics Arena blog, adding your name to the list doesn't guarantee tickets. It just means you'll be among the first contacted by a Sonics salesperson for the opportunity to buy tickets when the time is right.
I’m in to the “barely there” makeup look. It’s good day when I have a second to layer on mascara and apply some Burt’s Bees chap stick. But when I do take the time to actually go for more of a focused, deliberate “barely there” look, I turn to Koh Gen Do, a high-definition Japanese cosmetic line sold at Barneys.
With just about five weeks to go on my Earth Day 5k training, I’m racking up the miles. Just kidding, I’m kind of behind on my Couch to 5k schedule, but anyone who knows me well, knows that I rally like a boss.

Carmilia's, West Seattle’s most demure boutique, regularly filled with an inventory of imminently wearable clothing from lines like Velvet, Ella Moss, Michael Stars and some gorgeous jewelry from local designer Jules Accessory Designs (whose chunky semi-precious gem stone rings are covetable and affordable, such a nice combo), is hosting a vintage pop up shop on starting Thursday, March 14 during art walk from 6 to 9 p.m. and running all day Friday and Saturday.
A friend from Durham, North Carolina, recently visited Seattle for the first time. Ate his first-ever Dungeness crab – on a BLT with some C at Seatown – and slurped for the very first time Kushi oysters. We spent a couple happy hours trolling Pike Place Market, buying stuff he’d eventually cook for friends out on Hood Canal and made a final stop at Pike and Western Wine Shop, where he made a request: Do you have any Burgundian-style Chardonnay from Washington state?
Lunchtime at the Seattle mag offices can be a little painful. We spend so much time writing about and photographing gorgeous, gourmet food; but around our SoDo HQ, lunchtime dining options are limited. More often than not, tight deadlines (and a little bit of a laziness) find us calling Jimmy John's but secretly wishing we could pay the trusty couriers extra to bring us something other than sandwiches (tasty though they are).
As the seasons get ready to turn (and soon, let's hope, 'cause I could use a bit more sun), it’s a good time to check in and see what our local bars and distillers are up to. We’re lucky to live in such a creative cocktail culture, because there’s always fun and exciting things happening, including the below.

In the Kitchen with the Pike Place Fish Guys debuts Thursday, March 7, and those fish-throwing fishmongers are planning a big splash, offering sample recipes, bites from the book and plenty of access for autographs from noon until 3 p.m. at the city’s famous fish-throwing seafood shop. You know the place. Right by Rachel the Pig. Or, just look for the crowds with their camera phones pointed toward the fish-tossing action.
For those of you following my journey to train for the Seattle magazine Earth Day 5K on April 20 (my first 5K ever), or who have committed to running it with me, I have some exciting news: King 5's consumer reporter, and advocate of the people, Jesse Jones, is slated to be our Master of Ceremonies for the event. We're all really excited here at the magazine, since we're huge fans of his and all he does for the community.
