Get Free Tickets to 'Oklahoma!' at 5th Ave Theater

The 5th Avenue Theater just announced they are giving away free tickets to the February 5 performance of Oklahoma!

"And?" you may ask.

Well, according to Brangien Davis' preview of this production, there are a few updates and experiments in the works that promise to pull the show right out of kitsch country apparel and into an edgy interpretation of our country's history. In fact, it's the first time in my theater-loving career that I have looked forward to seeing the show.

Two catches to getting your hands on free tickets: 1) the show is on Super Bowl Sunday (not the easiest day to convert new theater-goers, but we devout members of the choir appreciate it all the same!). 2) You have to line up in person at the 5th Avenue Theater box office (1308 5th Ave.) on January 21, beginning at 8am. First 100 people in line get a free poster (if Eric Ankrim, above, is in it, you'll have to fight me for it). Call the box office at 206.625.1900 with questions.

Educational fun alert: the 5th is also planning a free community event on February 4 (10am-5pm). You can take a tour of the historic theater, see costume renderings, participate in country dance lessons in the actors' rehearsal space and hear scholars and artists discuss the importance of Rodgers and Hammerstein in theater history. I expect many illuminating insights–and even more flannel shirts.
