Julie Otsuka

Credit an early career as a painter for novelist Julie Otsuka’s stark and vivid imagery, evident in her award-winning novels When the Emperor Was Divine and 2011’s The Buddha in the Attic. Otsuka’s writing brings to cinematic life the struggles of Japanese-Americans, from the experience of the Japanese women brought to San Francisco as brides in the early 20th century, to the “reclassification” and internment camps of WWII, to the way this history colors the Japanese-American identity today.
