Nicolai Fechin

Look into the eyes of one of Nicolai Fechin’s portraits and you may feel as though you’re getting to know someone. The illustrious early-20th-century Russian-American oil painter depicted Russian peasants and Native Americans with penetrating gazes, incorporating realistic features with a blurred impasto overlay that hints at Abstract Expressionism. The Frye’s exhibition features a range of his work—all of which seems to reach out and request a conversation.
