Upon premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival last year, surfing documentary Splinters was applauded for taking the genre to new heights. The film follows four surfers (two women, two men) in Papua New Guinea who are competing in the first-ever national surfing championship in hopes that a surfing career will help them escape the socio-economic restrictions of their village. While the draw may be surfers catching perfect waves, the real drama lies in the surrounding cultural mores.
