Fashion Week Dreams

!–paging_filter–pa href=”http://www.mbfashionweek.com/” target=”_blank”New York’s fashion week/a started today and all the talk about Alexander Wang moving his show to Brooklyn (radical!) and the stellar indie lineup of a href=”http://milkmade.com/” target=”_blank”Milk’s Made Fashion Week/a (Cushnie et Ochs, Alexandre Herchcovitch, Jonathan Simkhai, Jeremy Scott and many others) running concurrent to the tents at Lincoln Center has got me thinking about Seattle’s nonexistent fashion week and why that is./p
pOther smaller cities have fashion weeks—heck, Portland has two; emSeattle/em mag has been supporting indie designers through our a href=”http://\/\/seattlemag.com.239elwb01.blackmesh.com/gallery/seamless-seattle-2…“Seamless in Seattle/a program for years now; a href=”http://\/\/seattlemag.com.239elwb01.blackmesh.com/bellevue-collection“The Bellevue Collection/a has an excellent store-focused fashion week, which includes a very popular, comprehensive and supportive indie show that I like very much; and Seattle has some brave souls who are valiantly making the effort to organize fashion events (a href=”http://\/\/seattlemag.com.239elwb01.blackmesh.com/metropolitan-fashion-week“Metropolitan Fashion Week/a comes to mind). But what I wonder is why can’t we get it together to set up a week (or a few days even) of designer showcases at various cool venues around town to showcase our local talent. I’m not talking about crazy, high-production value multi-media shows, contests with mentorship (which is very valuable, but a different creature all together) or even high gloss after parties, just a DJ and a runway and a focus on the cool clothing being designed by the emerging talent in Seattle./p
pI’m sure it just takes time, financial backing and the spirit of someone willing to organize the whole thing—and curate it, since I’d personally want to know that the lineup has been vetted based on a set of standards. But if I were in charge, here’s a partial list of designers I would love to see out there getting their props on the runway (and maybe challenged to create a specific couture collection for their show)./p

pa href=”http://michaelcepress.com/home/” target=”_blank”/aThis is definitely not an exhaustive list of all my fave designers in town. And this isn’t even taking into consideration the accessory and student designers out there.nbsp; We’re definitely not New York, nor would we ever want to be, and I get that, but I think we need to focus on being the very best Seattle we can be.nbsp;/p
