At Deming Maclise and James Weimann’s stylish French brasserie, Bastille (5307 Ballard Ave. NW; 206.453.5014), it’s nearly impossible to score one of the eight stools surrounding the grand indoor gas fireplace. But that’s OK; our second-favorite wintertime seat isn’t inside at all. It’s out on the spacious patio, where a permanent roof keeps things dry, and seasonal see-through walls (which come down in summer) keep the heat in when it’s cold outside.
Plus, there’s a second fireplace out there. And don’t forget the year-round, prime Ballard Farmers Market people-watching and a boss brunch menu. To Eat: Outstanding moules frites, warm potato salad with poached egg and pistachios and challah French toast or the stellar croque monsieur at brunch.
