REI's Flash 18

1. For those whose hikes are usually of the urban variety, Eddie Bauer’s new Trailhead Pack is all business, with a laptop pocket, and a cell-phone pocket built into the shoulder strap. At 22-liters, it’s on the small side; a great grab-and-go replete with thoughtful little features, such as an interior organizer panel, dual side mesh pockets, reflective trim and even straps for your hiking poles. Available in 7 colors; $59.95; eddiebauer.com

2. For sheer versatility, we’re putting REI’s new Flash 18 Pack on our wish list: When it’s not in use as an ultralight day pack, it can be inverted to become a stuff sack, and stuffed inside a bigger pack or duffel. The removable back panel also doubles as a sit pad (no more pine-needle butt!), and the sternum and hip straps are removable. With a drawstring top, and 18-liter capacity and only one interior zippered pocket, this pack’s lean style is best for casual jaunts, or for launching side adventures from the mothership frame pack. Available in 5 colors; $34.50; rei.com

3. Not too large, not too small—REI’s Trail 25 Pack’s 25-liter capacity allows you to carry a few extra layers, but won’t weigh you down on an epic all-day jaunt. It’s also good-looking enough for in-city use, comes in three cool colors and is made out of recycled ripstop PET. Best of all: The correct configuration of pockets, ideal for keeping water bottles away from wallets and cameras within reach. Available in 3 colors; $59.50; rei.com
