MUST SEE
The Book of Mormon
Ongoing (1/8-1/20) — Winner of a whopping nine 2011 Tony Awards, this clever take on the Mormon faith tackles tricky questions about life and death in ways both humorous and touching. The local run sold out immediately, but don’t lose faith! There are still a few tickets available. Enter your name in the lottery held two hours before every show for a chance to win tickets ($25 each; max of 2). Before you go: read arts and culture editor Brangien Davis’ review.
Through January 20, Times vary. Paramount Theatre, 911 Pine St.; 206.682.1414; stgpresents.org/paramount

MUST HEAR
Beck’s “Song Reader” Live
Saturday (1/19) — A lengthy roster of Seattle musicians will perform one song each from Beck’s “Song Reader” at Royal Room live this weekend. “Song Reader” is the album the indie sensation released last summer via sheet music only. In other words, there is no CD, digital download or album on which you can hit “play.” Seeing the music performed live by talented local artists is your best bet for getting close to the artist’s original intent.
1/19. Two separate shows: 7pm (all ages) and 9:30pm (21+). $12- $15. The Royal Room, 5000 Rainier Ave South; theroyalroomseattle.com

MUST COMMEMORATE
Presidential Inauguration / MLK Day
Monday (1/21) — Martin Luther King Jr. Day feels especially poignant this year, given that it falls on the same day we ring in the second term of our first African American president. Watch the televised Presidential inauguration ceremony (featuring performances by Alicia Keys, James Taylor and other stars) in the company of your fellow citizens at two free viewing parties, one at Town Hall and another at the Northwest African American Museum, and join in local volunteer service events planned to honor Dr. King.

MUST TASTE
