Kindle Fire Enters the Tablet-Hunger Games

News of Amazon’s trio of new gadgets released today is spreading like wildfire — namely about the hopeful iPad competitor, Kindle Fire.

Local news site Tech Flash reports:

The Kindle Fire’s strengths lie in a swift Web browser running on Amazon’s EC2 cloud, Amazon’s souped-up version of the Android app store, connections to the retailer’s content, including its vast shopping network, and competitive price. Amazon has also smoothed the rough edges of the Android OS, according to Bloomberg.

However, its weaknesses could also leave the Kindle Fire far from fully competing with the sophisticated iPad. The tablet has only a WiFi connection, with no cameras or microphone, and its small size could place limitations on ease of use.

With all the flame imagery, I can’t help but think of The Hunger Games (bear with me, it’s early).

Like Katniss, the new tablet is entering the ring as an underdog – however, cloaked in hot assets like lower price and Android OS, it’s got a chance to prove itself.

Of course, without a camera (come on Amazon, we need to see what our faces look like with sepia impressionist filters layered on them!) or remaining WiFi dependent (ewwww!) – it could die at any moment in the vicious arena that is mobile gadgetry development.

I’ll be rooting for it.

After all, a certain smart, savvy and essential magazine will be available to download on the device (price, features and more details about our new Seattle magazine Kindle Fire app to come very soon).
