The Must List: Seattle Opera’s Ring and Outdoor KEXP Concerts

Catch the Rose Windows on August 2 at KEXP's Concerts at the Mural

Must Bravo
The Ring Cycle

(8/4 to 8/25, times vary) — Running times for The Ring might make your blood run cold (the four mini-epic operas are Das Rheingold: 2.5 hours; Die Walküre: 4.5 hours; Siegfried: 5 hours; and Götterdämmerung: 5.25 hours), but the pros know all this tush time is worth it. There’s simply nothing that compares to Wagner’s monumental work, which features Rhine maidens, a lustful dwarf, Valkyries, a dragon and one ring to rule them all.

Must Rock
KEXP Concerts at the Mural

Friday (8/2, 5:30 p.m.) — Loll on the lawn at Seattle Center’s Mural Amphitheatre, where the city’s best indie-music station presents choice local bands on Friday nights all month long. This week kicks off with music from D McPherson, up-and-comers Rose Windows and GravelRoad, all who’ll play outdoors with the Space Needle as their stunning backdrop.

Must Watch
Strange Creatures Animated Short Film Screening

Saturday (8/3, 4 p.m.) — The Seattle Experimental Animation Team, made up of award-winning filmmakers, such as Tess Martin and Seattle magazine 2010 Spotlight Award Winner Drew Christie, present a slew of locally made animated shorts at the Northwest Film Forum. Don’t miss Christie’s Song of the Spindle, in which a man and a whale argue about who is smarter.

Must Sea
Boeing Air Show at SeaFair Weekend

(8/2 to 8/4, times vary) — We won’t hear the ear-splitting sounds of the Blue Angels whizzing above this year, but SeaFair Weekend still packs plenty of planes. The Boeing Air Show showcases some of best pilots around, performing daring sky stunts over Lake Washington. And don’t forget about the bridge closures! The I-90 floating bridge and several ramps will be closed this weekend from 1:15 to 2:40 p.m.
Must Drink
Red, White & Brew

Friday (8/2, 6:30 to 9 p.m.) — THIS EVENT IS OFFICIALLY SOLD OUT! There’s still time to snap up tickets, but they’re going quickly (available online for $35 until 12 p.m. Friday or $40 at the door) to Seattle magazine's Red White & Brew, our summery, celebratory tasting event featuring all the award-winning reds and whites (and pinks) from our Eighth Annual Washington Wine Awards. Held at the Olympic Sculpture Park and benefitting the Seattle Art Museum, RW&B promises plenty of hobnobbing amid enviable Puget Sound views, locally crafted brews, bite-sized fare from TASTE and sweets from Belle Epicurean.
