Not Your Average Lawn Sport

If you are a middle school girl, the Seattle Rainmakers‘ home game in West Seattle was the place to be last weekend, seeing as the Mother’s Day crowd was made up primarily of middle school boys.  It’s not a surprising fan base for Seattle’s first Major League Ultimate (MLU) team considering the growing popularity of the sport at the youth level and the fact that many of the Rainmakers themselves coach at schools throughout the city.

But if you’re not a middle school girl, the games are still worth checking out for the big throws, big catches and even bigger layouts.  The action-packed game was down to the buzzer, but in the end the Rainmakers were able to hold onto their tight lead to clench the victory against the Vancouver Nighthawks.

“The biggest difference [between club and professional] that I’ve felt has been the electric atmosphere at our games so far. Seattle has always had a strong Ultimate-playing community, and to see those crowds out at our games has been inspiring and special,” Rainmaker Moses Rifkin says.

The Rainmakers are midway through their inaugural season, competing against Vancouver, Portland and San Francisco-based teams in the Western Conference.  The team is 4-1 on the season, with the only loss coming at the hands of the conference- leading San Francisco Dogfish.

The next home game is June 1 when they take on the Portland Stags at Renton Memorial Stadium.  First pull is at 1 p.m.  Tickets are $16 at the gate with discounts available for students and children.
