Farmers markets? In this weather? Yep!

Strap on your snow boots and your warmest gloves and head down to University Way and 50th Streets for the snowiest University District farmers market in years (decades?). Chris Curtis, director of Seattle Farmers Market (dot org) assured me today that they'll be up and open tomorrow at 9am and running until 2pm.

No way to know exactly which farmers will make it quite yet, but she said, "It will be smaller and the parking lot is covered with snow and ice, but we have enough farmers and bakers coming into town to make it worthwhile and we will try to de-ice the lot as best we can tomorrow morning."

In the spirit of the holidays, if at all possible, get out and support the incredibly dedicated and friendly farmers who keep your bellies full all year long. They need your support more than ever in these chilly months, and if they've got the nerve to drive all the way from Carnation, Wenatchee, etc, you can probably figure out a way to trudge out of your house to buy a pie, a jar of delicious preserves or a box of apples for a holiday pie.

PS: The West Seattle farmers market will NOT be open on Sunday. No word yet on Ballard and Fremont, but I'll keep you posted.

**UPDATE: Chris Curtis says, "It looks as though Stokesberry will be there with eggs, Skagit River Ranch and Growing Things with roasting chickens, bacon, roast beef, etc.  Also Taylor Shellfish with fresh oysters, clams, etc and Loki Fish with wild salmon. Vegetables will be available courtesy of Stoney Plains, Full Circle and Whistling Train.  Loads of good baked goods and Panzanella foccacia and fresh ciders, too.  Folks who were planning on these farmers to supply gorgeous local foods for their holiday meals shouldn’t be too disappointed."
