MUST SEE
Double Dance Duty: Spectrum Dance Theater or Chunky Move
Two promising contemporary dance offerings open this weekend: Australian company Chunky Move’s Connected features a huge, hovering mechanical grid, which the dancers manipulate into wavelike motions with a complex pulley system; and Seattle’s own Spectrum Dance Theater’s presents Petruchska, Donald Byrd’s adaptation of Russian composer Igor Stravinsky’s ballet, staged in an immersive carnival setting that will temporarily transform the company’s Madrona Bathhouse studio inside and out. Hit both, then compare and contrast!

Chunky Move: 4/12-4/14. Times and prices vary. Meany Hall, UW Campus, 15th Avenue NE & NE 40th Street; 206.543.4882; meany.org; Petruchska: 4/13-4/22. Times and prices vary. Spectrum Dance Theater, 800 Lake Washington Blvd.; 206.325.4161; spectrumdance.org

MUST HEAR
Titanic – The Concert
Marking 100 years since the “unsinkable ship” sank, this adaptation of the Broadway musical is staged concert-style at the 5th Avenue Theatre, featuring 35 actors, including Anne Allgood and Ed Watts, performing alongside the 76-person strong Pacific Lutheran University Choral Union. The poignant songs are inspired by true-life stories from the Titanic—and based on a recent rehearsal Seattle mag visited, it’s definitely worth seeing.

April 13-15. Times and prices vary. 5th Avenue Theater, 1308, 5th Ave; 206.625.1900; 5thavenue.org

MUST WATCH
Langston Hughes African American Film Festival
This annual event—which returns to the newly renovated Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center—offers a wide variety of films exploring African-American history and experience. Opening night brings NFL player-turned-filmmaker Matthew Cherry to town to screen his film The Last Fall, about a young athlete attempting to rebuild his life after prematurely retiring from his sports career (watch a trailer below). Other highlights on the lineup include a documentary about writer/activist Audre Lorde and an examination of the mysterious “benevolent societies” once popular in the American south.

4/14-4/22. Times and prices vary.  Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center; 104 17th Ave. S; 206.684.4758; Tickets at Brown Paper Tickets; Schedule at langstonarts.org
