We swear, there is something in the water in Ballard: every year when we tally up the votes for our Seamless in Seattle contest (this year’s deadline coming up April 16, entry details here), an astounding number of finalists have Ballard-based New York Fashion Academy stamped on their resume. Last year, five of our seven winners, Jesica Milton, Renee Corrick, Tanya Min Jee Ellis, Beki Wilson and Jason Arrington, honed their sewing skills at NYFA. The year before- all five winners.
Next Saturday, April 10th, a new crop of graduating designers (and if the pattern holds true, we can only imagine the next batch of Seamless contenders) debut their collections at the school’s annual fashion show, Pour l’Amour: For the Love. Ranging from evening wear to outdoor apparel, the not-to-be-missed lineup from NYFA (in the designers' own words):
Anna Dicklhuber, cosmopolitan design with a little eccentricity
Amy Wallace, Sugar Coated; classic coats with fanciful sophistication
Cameron Levin, artistic and regal luxe eveningwear
Erika Ray, art infused apparel
Gabriela Reyes, everyday clothing for the modern urban male
Katie Chrisman, Apius Clothing; women’s wardrobe essentials
Leif Gregerson, Leif Christian; fun and stylish separates
Elizabeth Hamilton, sustainable clothing that you’ll actually want to wear
Mike Jolley, Legacy Clothing; futuristic outdoor apparel and accessories
Molly Griffith, Della Femina; specialty garments the emphasize natural beauty
Nicoletta Nelson, La femme Voillante; clothing celebrating the strong female
Both Ray’s “art-infused” and Jolley’s “futuristic outdoor ” descriptions have peaked my curiosity; I will be a guest model Seattle mag’s own Amy Wallace and her Sugar Coated line (hoping to avoid a Carrie Bradshaw “normal person” debacle on the runway). Follow my backstage tweets at @kcalamusa for the juicy details.
Grab tickets to one of two shows, 7 p.m. or 9 p.m. because even if I don't up the entertainment factor by tripping on the runway, the innovative new fashions will be worth a gander; tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door.
