I hate the tyranny of traditional meal times, especially this time of year.
Eating lunch at noon or dinner at 7 p.m. means facing packed dining rooms, for one thing. When it stays light late, a long, leisurely mid-day meal is one of my favorite summer rituals and I recently savored an incredibly wonderful lunch on the sun-dappled deck at the ever-lovely Pink Door. Though I’m not sure it should be called lunch when it starts at 3 p.m. and stretches into happy hour and involves two glasses of wine and the best dang cioppino this side of San Francisco.
An epic lunch means a late, light dinner and as a followup to that memorable meal in the middle of the afternoon, I stumbled onto what might be the most incredible food and wine pairing EVER.
OK, maybe that’s a bit of a overstatement. Maybe it was just so spot-on because it satisfied my yearning for something salty and something crisp.
I’m certainly not the first to declare the cheesy charm of POP Gourmet Popcorn’s Rogue Blue, made with Rogue Creamery’s Blue Heaven. It’s won a couple of pretty cool awards including a Gold sofi™ Award at the Summer Fancy Food Show in New York.
I popped open a package of that betcha-cannot-eat-just-one-handful snack and poured a glass of outstanding Broadbent Vinho Verde, one of my fave warm-weather whites. This bright, super dry, slightly spritzy wine from Portugal is as refreshing as a cold plunge into Puget Sound.
And the wine’s bracing acidity was tempered by the sharp blue cheese notes in the popcorn. Perfect-o!
I might have to spend the rest of the season exploring more Pop combos. The Kent-based company just came out with a savory line featuring a few of the Tom Douglas Rub with Love spice mixes. I think the Smoky BBQ with Northwest White Cheddar would be a fun one to hook up with a Northwest Sauv blanc, don’t you?
