WHERE: Steveston, a picturesque fishing village in Richmond, B.C., south of Vancouver.
WHY: The 65th annual Salmon Festival takes place July 1 (aka Canada Day).
DON’T MISS: The parade of floats, marching bands and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, plus carnival rides, belt-sander drag races and the massive salmon bake (1,200 pounds of wild salmon fillets grilled over open-fire pits)—a fitting tribute to the town once known as Salmonopolis.
STICK AROUND: Go expat for the July 4 weekend and rent bikes from Steveston Seabreeze Adventures (12551 Number One Road, Richmond; 604.272.7200; seabreezeadventures.ca) and explore the waterfront and dike system on two wheels.
GETTING THERE: Steveston is about 25 minutes north of the U.S.-Canada border. Take Highway 99 to exit 32 for Steveston Highway.
