Beer, brats, and a place to sit, now at Uli’s
Since opening Uli’s Famous Sausage in Pike Place Market in 2000, German-born sausage-maker Uli Lengenberg has provided market-goers and local restaurants (including Steelhead Diner, Etta’s and the Maltby Café) with fresh and varied sausages: spicy merguez, herbed lamb and, naturally, the best Bratwurst in town (sausages $6.49–$7.99/lb.). But what’s a brat without a brew? Last June, Lengenburg cleared out his sausage-making equipment (he now makes his offerings in Georgetown) and used the extra space to open a tiny sit-down mini-pub—which opened in September—where lunchers can sip a pint of beer, including Oroville’s Alpine Brewing Co.’s Märzen ($4), and bite into one of Uli’s dozens of sensationally juicy sausages, such as the tasty Nürnberger Rostbratwurst ($5.50) on a soft, toasted bun topped with just enough sauerkraut to balance out the savory meat juices.
