Red Lion is Now Motif
Located on Fifth Avenue between Pike St. and Union St., the hotel formerly known as Red Lion, is now called Motif and will be formally unveiled in all its updated glory on June 14. Inspired by the region’s fashion, music and art scenes, Motif was completely re-envisioned by Seattle-based architecture firm Ankrom Moisan, adding locally sourced wood, artwork (and fashion—see below) and digitally interactive spaces for guest engagement.
Additionally, Motif has committed to supporting local designers by working with them to create specific touches and patterns throughout the hotel. The inaugural designer is 2013 Seamless in Seattle Reader's Choice winner Jordan Christianson of Jonquil & Mr Black, whose mandate and inspiration was “summer time in Seattle, to coincide with the launch,” he says.
“If you're a Northwest native like I am, you know the summer is when the region finally awakens from its long slumber, and we are gifted with such a unique energy: color and shape, smells and sounds. I wanted to capture this experience so travelers to our city would be able to take a slice of this secret home with them,” Christianson continues.
Christianson was inspired by local flora and the colors of rhodies and poppies, lilac and cedar set against the bright blue of the Seattle summer sky. Designers and motifs (get it?) will change seasonally, but Christianson will have items in the hotel’s gift shop and hopes to work with the hotel again in the future.
The hotel’s lobby and rooms have all been updated, as well as their other event and public spaces. And if you haven’t visited Frolik!, the hotel’s bar with an amazing patio, you’re missing out on one of downtown Seattle’s sweetest hidden spots (see our June cover for more stunning visual inspiration).
