Opens Thursday (2/14-2/23) — Local theater fans who recognize veteran Seattle actor Bhama Roget will be thrilled to learn that her newest funny role is starring in her first full-length solo show. Described as a “multimedia sketch comedy,” Hippiecrit follows Roget’s own, er, complicated spiritual development. The show also kicks off the seventh annual Solo Performance Festival, where you can see other women performers rocking the fringe world.
2/14-2/23. 7:30 p.m. $15-$18. Theatre Off Jackson, 409 7th Ave S; 206.340.1049; theatreoffjackson.org

MUST MARVEL
War Horse
Ongoing (2/13-3/24) — Prepare yourself for living, breathing, full-scale horses engaged in battle on stage. Well, almost. Made of steel, leather and aircraft cables, the horses crafted by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company for the play War Horse are nothing short of stunning—Don’t believe us? Watch this video—and equally matched by a strong storyline. Based on Michael Morpurgo’s novel about a boy’s journey to rescue his beloved horse from the World War I battlefields in France, War Horse swept the 2011 Tonys, winning five awards, including Best Play.
2/13-3/24. Times and prices vary. The Paramount Theatre, 911 Pine St.; 206.682.1414; stgpresents.org

MUST HEAR
Seattle Rock Orchestra: Smashing Pumpkins
Saturday (2/16) — Fans of ’90s alt-rock titans The Smashing Pumpkins know exactly how to sing the lyric, “Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage,” from the song “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” off 1995’s Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. And they’ll have the chance to do just that, when Seattle Rock Orchestra gives the band the symphonic treatment. See the popular local group play hits from the celebrated 1993 release, Siamese Dream, as well as the magnum opus, Mellon Collie. Caged rats welcome.
2/16.  8 p.m. $20. The Neptune Theatre; 1303 NE 45th St., 206.682.1414; stgpresents.org

MUST TASTE
Shabu Shabu
In Seattle there are no shortage of restaurants to enjoy “hot pot,” the Chinese fondue in which you cook pre-sliced meats and veggies in a pot of boiling broth set in the middle of your table. But until recently, the Japanese version, shabu shabu, had remained elusive. The sleek, new Shabu Chic in the Chinatown–International District changes all that.
