Reel Grrls’ Wonderland
Thursday (12/27) — The creative geniuses at Reel Grrls, the local nonprofit that helps young women achieve their filmmaking dreams, have transformed Olson Kundig’s Pioneer Square storefront into a human-sized snow globe that, for tonight only, can become your personal karaoke stage. The Reel Grrls invite participants to collaborate in a variety of media-making experiments inside the snow globe, but tonight (11/27, 7-10 p.m.) it’s just for fun: karaoke inside the globe, under the fake falling snow. The globe is also open from 11am-5pm 12/28-12/29.

Children’s Films from Around the World
Starts Thursday (12/27–12/28) — Need something to do with the kids during their long break from school? The Seattle Public Library and Northwest Film Forum are hosting two free screenings of a selection of live action and animated short films for children, including “Dodu: The Cardboard Boy” (Portugal) about a boy who uses his imagination to escape dire circumstances and “Snowflakes and Carrots” (Canada) about a mischievous girl who robs all of her town’s snowmen of their noses. Recommend for ages 3+.

Grand Opening Weekend
Opens Saturday (12/29) — Be among the first to visit MOHAI’s new digs at South Lake Union park. Reminisce over classic Seattle memorabilia (the old Rainier R!), take in new exhibits, and marvel at the museum’s stellar view of Lake Union. Brangien Davis details MOHAI’s new mojo in her feature story, “The New MOHAI.” Bonus: The Center for Wooden boats is hosting a canoe steaming demonstration nearby on the same day. This is the first event of the Canoe Project, featuring native carvers working on the shores of Lake Union.

Polar Bear Plunge
New Year’s Day (01/01/2013) — Approximately 1,000 daring, costumed (and some say crazy) Seattleites will dash into the icy waters of Lake Washington at Matthews Beach for the 11th annual Polar Bear Plunge.
