South-End Restaurant Openings and Reopenings; Craft Beer + Food
There've been some really nice developments happening down in the Rainier Valley lately. At the top of my list is the opening of Tin Umbrella, a sweet coffee shop in the under-served Hillman City neighborhood. Owner Joya Iverson spoke with the Rainier Valley Post about how she came to open the shop, and her story's quite an inspiration. But if you're just interested in coffee, Tin Umbrella serves Olympia Coffee Company espresso, and it is very good. Next time you're in Columbia City grabbing a loaf of Filone, drive just a few blocks south and stop by for a cup.
Emerald City Fish and Chips, the nautical fry shop that opened three years ago near the Silver Fork, was hit by a large SUV and was closed for several weeks. But I'm happy to report the place reopened two weeks ago. Get in there and taste the catfish or cod.
In news of the oddly nostalgic variety, Angie's, the legendary Columbia City dive bar, is gone. It's strange to pass by the old dive bar and see nothing but a vacant plot of land, though it had been vacant for three years before the wrecking ball hit. I'll keep you posted when I hear what's replacing the old gal.
Finally, our friends Kendall and Kim at the Washington Beer Blog put on quite a party at their Craft Beer +Food event every September (this year's event is on September 25th). Ten local breweries, 11 restaurants, a whole bunch of beer and food geeks. Get your tickets today starting at 9am (and warning: they sell out quickly!).
