WHERE: The Olympic Peninsula.

WHY: For the Harvest Winery Tour (11/10–11/11. $30. Multiple locations; 800.785.5495; olympicpeninsulawineries.org), during which eight wineries between Port Angeles and Port Townsend open for tastings and harvest-inspired edibles. Try Eaglemount’s hard ciders, made from the fruit of its 1883 heirloom apple orchard in Port Townsend or Black Diamond’s red and white wines from grapes grown in its Port Angeles vineyard.

SOBER UP with a beautiful, blustery walk along Dungeness Spit, the 5.5-mile-long sandbar that’s home to harbor seals and acres of bleached driftwood. bonus: This area is the buckle of Washington’s banana belt, which means a much greater chance of sun. As with most state and national parks, entrance to the spit is free on Veterans Day weekend, November 10–11 (fws.gov/washingtonmaritime/Dungeness).

GETTING THERE: From Seattle, take the ferry to Bainbridge Island, cross the Hood Canal Bridge and follow State Route 19 or U.S. 101 north to the wineries of your choice.
