You’re a Seattle native. What motivated you to return to the area after medical school on the East Coast?
I love the Northwest, it is my home. I went to the East Coast to get an excellent medical education and outstanding dermatology training; however, I always knew I would return home to the Northwest. I feel lucky that the place I call home is located in such a beautiful part of the country and has a fantastic medical community with top-notch institutions.

What should Seattleites know about skin cancer as it relates to living in the Pacific Northwest?
Seattleites might be surprised to find out that our cloudy Pacific Northwest has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the country. This prevalence of skin cancer could partly be due to a misconception that sunscreen and sun protection are not needed on overcast days. Wrong! Damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays are present even on cloudy days. Dermatologists and the American Academy of Dermatology recommend that everyone use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (protects against UVA and UVB) with a sun protective factor (SPF) of 30 or higher on a daily basis, even on overcast days. It is equally as important to re-apply your sunscreen every two hours. A key factor is to find a sunscreen that you like, because if you don’t like your sunscreen, then you won’t use it.

What are some popular cosmetic facial treatments?
There are so many great options for facial cosmetic treatments, ranging from lasers (for dark spots, red spots, blood vessels and wrinkles) to new injections that melt away fat from under the chin. Nevertheless, tried-and-true treatments (such as Botox and Dysport) which smooth out wrinkles on the face, and fillers (such as Juvéderm and Restylane) which lift, restore volume, and contour the face and lips, remain some of the most popular cosmetic facial treatments.

What do you enjoy most about being a dermatologist?
I enjoy everything about being a dermatologist. I have the privilege of treating patients of all ages and bettering their lives. I have the opportunity to alleviate uncomfortable rashes, improve acne, cure skin cancers and help patients treat themselves to cosmetic procedures. However, what I enjoy the most about being a physician and dermatologist is the caring, long-term relationships I form and nurture with my patients.
