Father’s Day Gift Guide for the Drinking Dad

What to get dear old dad on his special day

By Seattle Mag June 16, 2016

Food & beer - food & beer - food & beer - food & beer - food & beer -.

Father’s Day is just around the corner – this Sunday! – but there’s still time to pick up the perfect gift for dear old dad. And if your pops is one who likes a good beer, or some choice spirits, or enjoys making and having cocktails with local and non-local ingredients, well, I have you covered. Check out the below for some gift ideas that might just get dad to buy you a drink.

Food & Beer, by Daniel Burns and Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergsø: This lovely new book (just out this past May) is ideal for any father who is a beer explorer at heart, and who also likes a really good meal. It’s written by the duo behind two fantastic Brooklyn restaurants that share one space: Tørst and Luksus, separated by a secret door. The former is run by the Danish gypsy brewer behind Evil Twin Brewing, Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergsø, and the latter chef’d by Canadian Daniel Burns, and it’s the first Michelin-starred restaurant in the world to exclusively pair food with beer. Both worked in the past at Copenhagen’s legendary Noma (Noma co-owner and chef chef René Redzepi wrote the book’s forward) and both have singular visions, which come out through the book. Of course, there are also recipes (50), and deep discussions of beer from all over the world, and how it can pair with food. The book itself is also a showpiece, with a striking design ethic, and wonderful photographs, that matches the contents perfectly.

Cognac Park Mini Pack: If your dad is one who likes to sample and sip fine spirits, perhaps with a cigar, this gift is one he probably won’t share (well, maybe with you). Distillerie Tessendier & Fils have been producers, growers, and distillers since 1880, and their Cognac Park boutique cognac is reknowned for intense – but approachable – flavors, and for crafting each of their Cognacs with care and patience. This pack features six 50 mililitier bottles, and is a great way to introduce Cognac Park to your father, or, if he’s already a fan, expand his knowledge. It includes VS, VSOP, XO Traditional Reserve, XO Extra, Borderies, and the XO Cigar Blend (or XO Vielle Fine Champagne) Cognacs. All boast their own personalites, but if your dad isn’t shy about cigars, the XO Cigar may end up being his favorite, thanks to its full rich palate, which can stand up to stogies. You’ll find this set locally at Esquin Wine & Spirits in Seattle and Capco Wine & Spirits in West Seattle.

VIP Tickets to Proof: The Washington Distillers Guild festival Proof is coming up on Saturday, July 9 (from 5:30 to 9 p.m.) at Fremont Studios, and if your father likes his local spirits – or maybe wants to learn more – getting him tickets would be great. But getting him VIP tickets, which earns you an extra hour of tasting, a commemorative tasting glass, and two extra tasting tokes, is even greater. Proof is a swell time to taste locally made spirits and liqueur, but even more, a chance to chat with the folks who make them. Expect 46 distilleries and more than a dozen restaurants (because all that tasting needs to be balanced by snacking) at the event. Want to go one step up in your gifting? Get yourself a VIP ticket, too, so you and dad can go together.

Glassware for Less at Chambers Bay Distillery: Show pops that you have a frugal side (he’ll be glad of that) by taking him down to Chambers Bay Distillery to pick out a bottle, plus some glasses to drink it out of, thanks to their Father’s Day Special. It’s on through June 19 (which is Father’s Day!), and gets you 25 percent off glassware whenever you buy a bottle of whiskey – from their smoother Greenhorn bourbon to the spicy ghost-pepper’d Ghost Dog whiskey – at their University Place tasting room, about a half mile southwest of Tacoma Community College.
