Bako Beckons
The now-shuttered Jade Pagoda was never really about the food—the kitschy digs, the bad (but strong!) cocktails—it was an experience, and the food was as bad as you’d expect. But it was a neighborhood icon, so I am happy to report that the Capitol Hill space is being reborn as another Chinese restaurant, although one with much loftier ambitions. Keeman Wong, a Vancouver, B.C., native, will open 40-seat  Bako (BAH-ko) this fall. Wong describes Bako as a refined, modern Cantonese restaurant; careful sourcing, a focus on seasonal and local products and a kitchen decked out with commercial wok stations will distinguish Bako from other Cantonese restaurants when it opens in October.

This and That
Travelers, the Indian tea room on Pine Street, has long been a weekend destination for passionate Indian food lovers; the wonderful vegetarian thalis are served only on the weekends. Now, chef and owner Allen Kornmesser has opened a second Travelers on the north end of Beacon Hill (2524 Beacon Ave.), where he’s serving Indian thalis (mixed plates with curries, rice, pickles and assorted condiments) every day except Monday. There’s seating on the west-facing front patio, and unlike the original Travelers, beer is available. Also just opened: the second outpost of The Confectional, Pike Place Market’s delicious cheesecakery. I love the caramel and the Seattle style New York cheesecakes (Capitol Hill, 618 Broadway Ave. E).
