This animation studio, the Disney of Japan (or is Disney the Studio Ghibli of America?), is in the midst of a yearlong celebration of its classics, with screenings each month through the rest of the year. July’s offerings are two coming-of-age tales about young women: Whisper of the Heart (7/1–7/2), about an eager young writer; and a film by studio cofounder Hayao Miyazaki, Kiki’s Delivery Service (7/28–7/31), the fanciful tale of a young witch’s apprenticeship as a broomstick aviatrix—which, by the way, had its U.S. premiere at the 1998 Seattle International Film Festival. 7/1–7/2, 7/28–7/31. Times, prices and venues vary. fathomevents.com
