Summer is heating up, as are the Seattle bar announcements, as two of the city’s most legendary drinking establishments have recently un-tapped big news. Plus, it’s the time of year when summer reading is in mid-page-turn, and I’ve a great suggestion if you sometimes like to sip a good drink while browsing a good book.

Liberty Becoming First American Co-op Bar: Over the past 10 years, Capitol Hill’s Liberty has been recognized for top trend-setting cocktails, a wide spirit selection, star shakers, and never closing its doors. Now the bar is trailblazing again, becoming the first cooperative cocktail bar. With help from the folks leading Seattle’s Central Co-Op, Liberty owner Andrew Friedman and the bar staff have been both working out how a co-op bar will operate, as well as detailing the process so other bars across the country can follow and also go the co-op route, which means all bar income and profits will be disbursed by agreement within the co-op membership, and the staff has chosen a group of four co-workers to define future procedures. Want to learn more? Following Liberty on Twitter is a start. But really, the best way to learn more is to stop in the bar, grab a stool, order a drink, and ask.

Rob Roy Allowing Customers to Buy into New Bar: Speaking of renowned Seattle bars, Belltown’s Rob Roy has been a bastion of incredible cocktails and star shakers for the last seven years, and now it’s getting siblings from owners Chris and Anu Elford. The former is taking the lead on beer centric restaurant and bar No Anchor. The other new bar is Navy Strength – a tropical tiki spot. And you can become a Navy Strength “Insider” and help them get the bar open! They’ve partnered with restaurant tech startup EquityEats in crowdfunding this sure-to-be-tropical-tastic bar, and anyone can be a part of the fun. Insiders get exclusive VIP benefits – including credit for drinks and food – and priority treatment at all the Anu and Chris locations as a reward for helping out, as well as recognition, and more. Learn more and sign up on the Navy Strength Equity Eats page, or stop by an informational event Monday, August 1 at Rob Roy, starting at 7 p.m., with complimentary tiki drinks and appetizers.

Take The Manhattan to Read on the Beach: Even if you’re doing your summer reading somewhere besides a beach, if you like a good drink, you should add Philip Greene’s new book The Manhattan: The Story of the First Modern Cocktail to your list of summertime page turners. One of the co-founders of the Museum of the American Cocktail, as well as the author of To Have the Have Another: A Hemingway Cocktail Companion, Mr. Greene brings a historian’s eye and a storyteller and cocktail-lover’s heart to his newest book. In Part One of the book, he delves into the possible origin stories of this legendary drink that changed the whole cocktail landscape, and details the Manhattan’s wide legacy and influence. Part Two includes a host of recipes and variations, from classics to modern numbers, that carry on the Manhattan lineage. The whole book is written in a fun-and-knowledgeable style – reading it is much as if you were sitting at the bar with Mr. Greene. There’s also a foreword by King Cocktail himself, Dale DeGroff.
