Like a proper frame sets off a fine painting, a handmade serving bowl or rustic earthenware plate is a showcase for your dinner. Several distinctive, locally made serving pieces caught our eye this year.

From top: Two small bowls from Mamnoon made by West Seattle potter Akiko Graham, who works with stoneware clay (akikospottery.com); chunky white glazed bowl from Terra Plata, designed by chef/owner Tamara Murphy and thrown by pottery teacher Jamil Cherise; a 7-inch hirabachi bowl by Akiko, used at Art of the Table; an Akiko soup bowl, from Mamnoon; a 9-inch slab plate with a Spanish pig’s hoofprint, from Lark; an Akiko oval slab plate (used to hold a trio of the small round dishes shown) from Mamnoon; a glazed black clay plate from Art of the Table, by Akiko. In the foreground: a third small Akiko bowl from Mamnoon.
