If you love BuzzFeed and a weed buzz, you might enjoy a daily dose of The Fresh Toast (thefreshtoast.com). Launched in October by 48-year-old JJ McKay, a former business consultant and well-connected Seattleite, The Fresh Toast offers weed-centric news, health tips and recipes, plus humorous lifestyle and entertainment content that appeals to a general audience.

“I learned no one was really talking to the majority of the market: people who use but aren’t stoners—and that’s 87 percent of the market,” says McKay. TFT stories range from Julien Perry, former Seattle magazine food and dining editor and now The Fresh Toast “consume editor,” detailing her pet peeves about restaurant menus to a rundown on seasonal activities that lend themselves to leafy accompaniment.

Future plans include a Web series, digital productions and other creative content. “Every day, we just want to give people a chuckle and make them happy,” says McKay.

One of the enduring memories I have of…
