Two Seattle Hotspots Named Among America’s Best New Restaurants

And Seattle's representatives couldn't be more different.

National foodie mag Bon Appetit just released their list of the 50 best new restaurants in America, and guess what? Seattle made the cut.

French showstopper Marmite and lunchtime game-changer Mean Sandwich, both spots we reviewed and loved in the last year, are representing our fair city on the list. (We’re guessing JuneBaby didn’t open in time to make the cut, since the Southern hotspot has gotten nothing but accolades since it opened in April.)

The other four Northwest finalists were all from Portland (d’oh).

What we appreciate about this list is the diversity—that there’s room for both a very casual sandwich shop that throws backyard keggers and a refined French restaurant run by a fine dining vet is very telling.

Check back August 15, when the magazine releases it’s top 10 from these 50. And just a few weeks later, you’ll be able to read our own picks for best new restaurants in our September issue.

A few seasonal bites to eat as spring makes its way onto Seattle plates.

There’s a lot of talk about rebirth and rejuvenation around this time of year. I like to think that a smaller version of growth happens within us regularly. It shows up as quiet sproutings, rooting underground that we fail to notice until they bloom. If we are to follow nature, the season shows us that…

Drumroll please… The finalists for the James Beard Awards were announced this week, and two Seattle chefs made the cut for the Best Chef: Northwest and Pacific category — Atoma’s Johnny Courtney and Surrell’s Aaron Tekulve. For them, culinary glory remains on the table, but we’re still planning on giving the other restaurants and bars…

Do you notice an extra spring in your step? It couldn’t be that ferry boat full of crab nachos—or the cauliflower wings—as you watch the Mariners play baseball for the first time since October, could it? Perhaps you have a light rail adventure to the Eastside planned? Whatever it is, here are some more things…
