JAZZ
The Earshot Jazz Festival features more than 50 performances, including an opening-night birthday tribute to Thelonious Monk, “Monk 10/10,” featuring 10 of Seattle’s best jazz pianists playing works by the jazz genius, and a 10-piece ensemble led by local jazz pioneer Wayne Horvitz. Seattle’s avant-jazz scene is well represented at the fest, with performances by Beth “Crystal Beth” Fleenor and Industrial Revelation; plus, Seattle vocalist Johnaye Kendrick sings sweet songs, and legendary saxophonist Pharoah Sanders works his woodwind magic. 10/10–11/11. Times, prices and venues vary. earshot.org

CLASSICAL
Late-20th-century Czech composer Antonín Dvořák dominates the season at the Seattle Symphony, with Ludovic Morlot conducting several of his masterworks over three weeks. We suggest the performance of Symphony No. 9 in E minor (aka “From the New World”), the energetic, rhythmic work Dvořák wrote when he was living in New York City, featuring a guest appearance by violinist Hilary Hahn. Also on the bill (10/2 and 10/4 only) is contemporary composer John Adams’ lively “Lollapalooza,” which captures a new world of a different sort. 10/2–10/4. Times and prices vary. Benaroya Hall, 200 University St.; 206.215.4747; seattlesymphony.org

OPERA
The Seattle Opera kicks off the season—its first with new general director Aidan Lang at the helm—with Don Giovanni, by the one, the only Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Premiered in 1787, “The Don” still captivates as it chronicles the last 24 hours of a lothario who delights in philandering, conniving and killing. Spoiler alert: In the end, the jerk gets his comeuppance. 10/18–11/1. Times and prices vary. McCaw Hall, 321 Mercer St.; 206.389.7676; seattleopera.org

Cascadia Art Museum Lands a Game-Changing Gift of Timeless Treasures

More than 75 rare Northwest paintings join the museum’s collection

What did the Aurora Bridge or South Lake Union look like in the 1930s? Probably not the way you picture it. Before tech campuses and traffic jams, Seattle’s waterfront and cityscapes had a different kind of energy — one captured in some of the paintings now headed to Cascadia Art Museum. Thanks to a major…

Fifth Avenue’s Waitress Delivers

Fifth Avenue’s Waitress Delivers

The musical is uplifting, even whimsical at times

I loved the movie Waitress when it came out almost two decades ago. I also loved The Fifth Avenue Theatre’s rendition of the musical of the same name. An almost sold-out crowd last week was boisterous and raucous, with many booing the abusive husband (“Earl,” played by Dane Stokinger) and cheering the relationships between the…
