Move over, aerospace and tech. Whiskey wants a word with you. Seattle may have another defining characteristic.

For the second consecutive year, Seattle’s Westland Distillery has achieved international acclaim. Whiskey Advocated named Westland’s Wine Cask Finish American Single Malt Whiskey No. 20 on its prestigious Top 20 Whiskeys of 2024 list.

Westland is the only Seattle distillery ever featured on the list. Last year, Westland’s Garryana 8th Edition ranked No. 3 on the same list.

Westland Managing Director Jason Moore says the rankings prove that Seattle and Westland are becoming a leading force on the global whiskey landscape.

“This award is a tribute to our passionate team, our local partners, and the rich agricultural bounty of our region,” he says. “We are thrilled to share this exceptional whiskey with the world.”

Westland used casks featuring cabernet, sauvignon, syrah and red blend producers sourced from Washington wineries in crafting the single malt whiskey featuring. Westland says the whiskey “seamlessly marries the elegance of wine with the complexity of single malt.”

A 2022 report from the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States found that the industry supports almost 34,000 jobs across Washington state.

Blazing Birds: Why is Hot Chicken So Hot?

A friend and I were recently discussing the hot-chicken craze when he asked, “why do we need more chicken places? They’re everywhere.” It piqued my curiosity, and a little research uncovered some interesting tidbits. Thanks to Google, I discovered that the chicken wars began in earnest about four years ago, but its modern roots go…
