From The Editor: It’s Always A New Age

The new issue of Seattle magazine is out now

By Rob Smith September 6, 2024

Our September/October issue focuses on aging, featuring stories on family caregivers, second acts, and finding purpose in later life.

We’re all getting older.

The September-October issue of Seattle magazine is centered around meaning in aging, and the challenges and triumphs we all face as we get older. Finding purpose in aging can be a fulfilling and empowering process and, as with so many things, Seattle and Washington state are the places to be.

Did you know, for example, that the so-called “silver economy” here is more robust than in most states? (Think savings, senior spending, household income). Or that life expectancy is higher here than in all but one other state?

Are you, or do you know, someone who is a family caregiver looking after an aging relative? We look at how three caregivers juggle such an emotional endeavor with careers and families. Their stories are incredibly heartfelt and tearfully touching.

Getting older doesn’t have to mean golf, retirement, or even slowing down. We profile five prominent Seattlites pursuing their “Second Acts” after successful careers — passion projects that feed their soul and benefit others at the same time. You can also get to know Dwayne Clark, a filmmaker and author who also co-founded fast-growing Aegis Living, a Bellevue-based chain of independent, assisted-living, and nursing home facilities. His story is nothing short of fascinating.

Be sure to also catch Dr. Pepper Schwartz’ column on why she doesn’t really believe in “retirement,” at least as we know it.

This is also our annual fall travel issue, and we give you tips on where to go and how to stay in style.

We’ll roll all these and other stories out online in coming weeks. In the meantime, grab a copy at your favorite newsstand or, even better, be the first to know — subscribe now
